Periodontal Disease Treatment
Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that as many as half of Americans ages 30 and older have some type of periodontal disease.
Healthy gums are the foundation for optimal dental health. Your teeth can look great, but they’re not really healthy if gum disease is an underlying problem. At Arcadia Dentaldontics, we understand that gum disease is not just an oral health issue – it also poses a serious threat to your general well-being.
Prevention Is the Key
Gum disease can easily be avoided with professional dental cleanings and proper oral hygiene. We screen for gum disease at every appointment and offer treatment options that fit your specific condition. Prevention is the simplest and most effective method for reducing the risk of developing gum disease.
Improper oral hygiene is a major contributor, but other causes of gum disease include tobacco use, family history, hormonal changes, and lack of proper nutrition. Other factors that can contribute to gum disease are crooked or missing teeth and teeth grinding.
Common symptoms of gum disease may include:
- Sore, inflamed, or swollen gums
- Bleeding gums when you brush
- Gums receding or pulling away from teeth
- Loose teeth
- Chronic bad breath
Fighting Gum Disease With Effective Treatment
At Arcadia Dentaldontics, we believe in fighting gum disease in the least invasive, most cost-effective ways possible. Developing on the extent of gum disease present, a routine dental cleaning with our hygienist may be all that’s needed.
During your regular dental cleaning, one of our trained hygienists will check your gums carefully for any signs of disease. If we find the mildest form of gum disease, gingivitis, your hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning. An antibiotic rinse and follow-up cleaning may also be recommended.
If your gum disease is more serious, our dental hygienist may need to perform a deep cleaning. This involves a thorough cleaning where plaque and tartar are gently removed from tooth surfaces around the gum line.
During a deep cleaning, uneven surfaces on the roots of your teeth where germs collect will be removed. This helps prevent the growth of bacteria that contribute to gum disease. We will schedule more frequent cleanings in the future and discuss oral hygiene and the best practices to stop the disease from coming back.
